About French Valley Vineyards;
Owner: Steve Kozelko
Steve grew up in Traverse City and has lived and worked in the region his entire life. He is a wine enthusiast and purchased the farm on French Road, Cedar in 2000 with the intention of planting grapes. His first harvest was in 2003, and the grapes of French Valley have been winning awards ever since. In May of 2016, Steve opened the first Tasting Room, renting the space from his partner, Pam who owns the Vineyard Inn on Suttons Bay. Steve also has a day job; he is a dentist, and owns Harborside Dental in TC where he has been in practice nearly 40 years.
Winemaker: Charlie Edson ( Bel Lago ) Charlie has been making wine for over 50 years, experimenting and growing grapes in Leelanau County. He holds a PhD in Enology from MSU where he studied under Stanley Howell, the father of northern Michigan viticulture. Charlie and his wife, Amy established Bel Lago in 1987. Bel Lago is just south of French Valley Vineyard, also on French Road.
The Grapes: French Valley is a 75 acre farm, and to date there are ten acres planted with the following varietals: Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, Riesling, Frontenac Gris; Pinot Noir, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and newly planted Marquette. Our wines are 100% Leelanau County, 100% estate grown...right in our own vineyard. No exceptions. Under the expert care of vineyard manager Robert Bert Walters we have had many good years and good yields.
The Tasting Room: While Bert manages the activities at the farm in Cedar, Nancy Crutchfield manages sales at the Tasting Room in Suttons Bay. The wine menu offers 15 wines to sample, all award winning wines and more than a few double gold winners. There is also a Wood Stone pizza oven where the best thin crust pizzas are baked. And, small plates, cheese and artichoke dips, and charcuterie boards. The Staff at FVV is known not only to be knowledgeable about wine, but very friendly and engaging. We want the wine tasting experience to be fun and casual.
