Mari Vineyards, makers of specialty red wines, is nestled on the Old Mission Peninsula, an 18-mile long strip of land that divides the Grand Traverse Bay in Northern Michigan at the 45th parallel. Owner Marty Lagina made the risky choice to grow red grapes that shouldn t normally grow in the Michigan climate, thereby breaking the mold of supplying mostly Michigan white wines. Thanks to the innovative technique of utilizing heat capturing canopies, a term coined as Nellaserra, Mari Vineyards is able to ensure the maturation of exotic red grape varietals through the cold spring and the chilly autumn temperatures consistently experienced in Northern Michigan.
Since 1999, when the first haphazard and rushed planting occurred with the help of friends and family, to the 2006 introduction of the flagship wine named Row 7, Mari Vineyards had been creating red wines full of complex and rich characteristics that rival those found on the West coast. Today, Mari Vineyards has over 60 acres of grapes planted on Old Mission Peninsula. The newly completed 30,000 sq.ft. gravity flow production facility and tasting room is open from 11 am- 7 pm Monday through Saturday, and 11 am- 5pm on Sunday.
Call ahead for groups to arrange a tasting and an opportunity to tour the incredible facility.
